I don’t have the mental capacity to sew at the minute, but I do want to share a #ThrowbackThursday of a dress I finished earlier in the summer 💛

I had Vogue 9328 in this primrose yellow viscose crêpe on my Make Nine plans for this year. The fabric has a pebbled texture, but it is incredibly soft and drapes beautifully. I thought that the flutter sleeves and gently a-line panelled skirt would really showcase this fabric!
In hindsight, I should have stabilised the waistline and neckline better; I staystitched these areas, but there is some stretching and distortion that are causing draglines.

This dress kept me cool during some really sunny days in the Bay Area (although I did get a bit sunburned, as seen in these photos!) ☀️

The last few days since Sunday have been unbearable, as a fundamental part of my life got utterly shattered and since then, I have been unable to really function; I can’t eat anything and I am barely sleeping more than two hours a night. I just swing emotionally from numb to devastated to angry.

The election has really capped off this traumatic week. My heart was already broken from the last few days, and yet now I fear, it is only the beginning.

The Trump rhetoric surrounding immigrants is deeply disturbing and puts Simon and me in a potentially very vulnerable position. While we both have the privilege of being white, European, lawful immigrants, we are by no means safe from whatever may be coming. The risk and suffering for others, in particular BIPOC and illegal immigrants, will of course be much worse. While much is still unclear on how far Trump and the Project 2025 policies will go, I think it is naïve to assume even people who came to America “the right way” will be protected, given the conversation regarding denaturalisation of US citizens born to immigrant parents.

I’m so scared to be living here as a woman. I’m so scared to consider starting a family with Simon, as a foetal heartbeat is more valuable than my own. I’m so scared that I will no longer be able to access contraception, or in the event of a miscarriage or unviable pregnancy, access to abortifacients. I’m 32 now, turning 33 soon and the chance of a pregnancy ending in a miscarriage for women in their 30s is between 11–20%. Not being able to access healthcare that may save my life if things go wrong is so, so scary.

I’m so scared how further rightwing this county will swing and all the consequences of that, which puts the human rights of minorities and LGBTQIA+ in jeopardy. I’m so scared for Palestine and Ukraine. I’m so scared that an [alleged] serial rapist with multiple felonies and a fragile ego may put nuclear Armageddon on the table for the world.

Most of all, I’m so scared I now have to face this without the support system I’ve always known and relied on for my entire life.

I used the @gertie18 Maria Dress, which gives just the slightest nod to a traditional dirndl silhouette. The bodice has princess seams with a graceful scoop neck that doesn’t sit too low, and a knee-length skirt that is full and pleated. There are three sleeve choices and an optional Peter Pan collar and a fabric belt. This is quite a fabric-hungry pattern, and I only had 2.5m of my cotton lawn, so I switched out the pleated skirt for a simple gathered skirt that hit just above my knee.

I really like the drafting in particular; the Charm Patterns cover a wide range of sizes and offer bust-cup sizing up to an H-cup, so I usually have minimal fitting tweaks needed. I made this in a size 8 with the F/G cup bodice.

As for the gorgeous cotton lawn from @fabricgodmother, it has been on my radar for a while and I snapped it up at the Stitch Festival in March 💕 This cotton lawn washes, presses and sews up beautifully. It gathers really well and is lightweight, making it perfect for warm-weather clothing!

This challenge hosted by @blossomsandwich makes me so happy, as I bought this gorgeous @fabricgodmother cotton lawn at the Stitch Festival earlier this year and it reminds me of a day of so much joy and meeting so many wonderful sewists in person! ♥️

I made a @gertie18 #MariaDress, with a gathered skirt. I love the slightly dirndl vibes with the princess seams and scoop neck 🥰

🌸🌼 A springtime co-ord now that the weather has finally become warmer! I picked up this pretty floral matelassé last December and whipped up a cropped blazer with matching mini skirt earlier this year. I adore how unapologetically inspired by ‘Clueless’ this co-ord is — I think Cher Horowitz would approve 🥰

This jacket is finished off with a splash of pink, coming from the incredibly soft Cupro @ladymcelroyfabrics lining — swipe to the end to see! I’ve also added some beautiful iridescent @pigeonwishes.shops buttons 💕
